LEDE
On Tuesday 3rd May 2016, during the Battle of the Mesh v9, the Linux Embedded Development Environment (LEDE) project was announced.
Citing its website, "The LEDE project is founded as a spin-off of the openwrt project and shares many of the same goals. We are building an embedded Linux distribution that makes it easy for developers, system administrators or other Linux enthusiasts to build and customize software for embedded devices, especially wireless routers.
We wish huge success to the LEDE project and we'll be testing it as the base for the mvwrt firmware in the future.
Status
LEDE project was founded as a fork of OpenWrt project and shared many of the same goals. It was created in May 2016 by a group of core OpenWrt contributors due to disagreements on OpenWrt internal processes.
A year later in May 2017 pending approval of the LEDE developers reconciliation between both happened and a proposed remerger should preserve the OpenWrt branding but use many of the LEDE processes and rules. The remerge proposal vote was passed by LEDE developers in June 2017.
